Key Findings
  • Throughout the study, a number of barriers and constraints were identified by women, service providers, policymakers, and others in regard to the problems low-income and uninsured women face in getting adequate and quality health care in Leon County. Major barriers include transportation, child care, the ability to navigate the system, and access and availability to services in a timely manner.

Proposed Future Model
12
Next Step
  • The workgroup of the Primary Healthcare Implementation Advisory Board  (PHAB) will develop cost estimates for the proposed healthcare delivery model and craft an implementation plan. (March 2005)
13
“The Invisible Tax”
  • We are already paying for
    uncompensated care!
  • Those who cannot afford healthcare still get sick and go to the hospital.

  • Hospitals pay for this uncompensated care by charging more for healthcare services.

  • The insurance companies cover the increased cost of medical care by raising their insurance premiums.

  • By paying more for health insurance, the general public is indirectly paying for the healthcare of the uninsured.
14
Uncompensated Care
at Leon County Hospitals
  • TMH provided more than $52 million in uncompensated care for the year ending Sept. 30, 2003.
  • During the same time, CRMC provided more than $14 million
  • That adds up to more than $66 million in uncompensated care annually in Leon County
15
What You Can Do
  • It is critical to have community-wide support in order for our healthcare system to be successful. We invoke the support of the Chamber of Commerce to help us develop a comprehensive, coordinated healthcare delivery system for the citizens of Leon County.
